International Women's Day is all about women. This special day is on 8 March every year. On International Women's Day, extra attention is paid to the emancipation of women in society. Topics such as women's rights and equal opportunities for all are highlighted on this day.
How did International Women's Day come about?
Its origins have to do with the rise of the socialist labour movement in the 19e century. Among other things, this movement wanted universal suffrage. A pioneer in this struggle was Aletta Jacobs. In March 2011, Women's Day was first celebrated in many different countries such as, Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria and the United States. The first Dutch Women's Day was organised by the Social Democratic Women's Clubs on 12 May 1912.
Why do we think International Women's Day is important?
